One of the many known names associated with Shiva – Adiyogi is the “Neelakantha” or “blue-throated” one.

There is a story in yogic literature:

There was a long-standing conflict between gods and demons. Since so much was lost in these conflicts, they decided to uncover the elixir of life, or amrutha, hidden in the oceans and share it among them. Thus, both sides would become immortal by drinking this elixir, and they would be able to fight each other happily.

They entered into a collaboration and decided to unleash the elixir of immortality by churning the oceans.

When they first started churning, instead of amrutha or elixir of life, a deadly poison came to the surface from the bottom of the ocean. It was called “halalhal”. This deadly poison suddenly appeared in huge quantities. All the gods and demons were frightened. With so much poison coming out, the whole world would be destroyed. And there was no one among them who could do anything about it.

As usual, they thought Shiva would be the right man. They asked Shiva to come near them and showed him the enormous amount of poison that was released. “If this spreads, it will ruin life,” they said…

This event points to the need to turn to Blue-Throated Shiva in order to get rid of the negativity, prejudice, fear, anger, jealousy, hatred, and greed that are as poisonous as Halahal.

Vishuddhi or Vishuddha, (throat chakra) essentially means filter. If your Vishuddhi is active, it filters everything. Poisons can enter you in many ways – a wrong thought, emotion, idea, energy, or impulse can poison your life.

An active Vishuddhi frees you from all these influences. In other words, once your Vishuddhi is active, nothing negative going on around you will affect you anymore. With your own energy, you will tend to be a powerful being. Shiva (Adiyogi) is the master of the Vishuddhi occult. That’s why his throat is blue. When one’s energies are centered in Vishuddhi, one develops an electric blue aura.
